These New Photos of Princess Charlotte & Prince Louis Are Precious

We really like surprises from Kensington Palace. It helps that the Duchess of Cambridge (who’ll always be Princess Kate to us) is an extraordinary photographer with a mushy proud-mama heart. No one was expecting any more photos of the royal family for a while &mdash we figured they were all pictured-out after the big postpartum meet and greet on the steps of the Lindo Wing at St. Mary’s Hospital in London. But nope: Kate and Prince William just shared two gorgeous photos of Prince Louis &mdash one featuring birthday girl Princess Charlotte, who just turned 3 and is clearly rocking the big sister role.

All the Best Photos of the Royal Family From the Past 20 Years

Welcome to the royal family! It’s a world of princes and princesses, dukes and duchesses, kings and queens &mdash and yes, the occasional scandal and intrigue. Queen Elizabeth II and her husband Prince Philip’s children and grandchildren have been a source of fascination in the UK and US alike, and we delight in following their royal traditions, charity work, and ever-growing families. They may not be our monarchs, but they definitely have our attention.

While the Queen presides over the royal family, the two couples we’ve taken the most interest in are grandchildren Prince William and Prince Harry. Prince William and wife Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge share three kids: Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and their youngest, Prince Louis &mdash some of the sweetest (and best-dressed kids we’ve ever seen). And of course, these young royals have a new cousin: baby Archie, the son of Prince Harry and wife Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex.

Harry and Meghan stepped back from the royal family in January and will no longer take on royal engagements with William, Kate, and the others &mdash but family is family, no matter what your title. The Queen has always been especially close to Harry, and formed a special bond with Meghan early on, as the American actress bravely joined the royal family. While Meghan and Harry are currently living in the US, they’ve promised to reside in the UK part-time. After all, Archie needs his playdates with his cousins!

As these kids grow up, we’ll have a whole new generation of royals to follow, and who knows how they might restructure and redefine what the royal family stands for. For now, we’re just as obsessed with these timeless royals as we ever were &mdash the fashion, the fanfare, and all the family love.

Was Meghan's son Archie denied the title 'prince' because he's mixed race?

The Duchess of Sussex told Oprah she was shocked at the decision – but who made it, and was it fair?

The Duchess of Sussex suggested her son Archie was denied his birthright of the title of prince by the palace and that the decision went against protocol.

She spoke of her shock at being told he would not get police protection because he did not have a title, and suggested that the decision was taken because of his mixed race.

She was clearly upset at the “idea of the first member of colour in this family not being titled in the same way that other grandchildren would be”.

“It’s not their right to take away,” she told Oprah Winfrey.

She was asked by Winfrey: “Do you think it’s because of his race?”

Meghan replied: “In those months when I was pregnant, all around this same time, so we [had] the conversation of he won’t be given security, he’s not going to be given a title.

“And, also, concerns and conversations about how dark his skin might be when he’s born.”

Under protocols established by George V in letters patent more than 100 years ago in 1917, the children and grandchildren of a sovereign have the automatic right to the title HRH and prince or princess.

At the time Archie was born, he was the great-grandchild of a sovereign, not a grandchild.

George V’s declaration sets out: “The grandchildren of the sons of any such sovereign in the direct male line (save only the eldest living son of the eldest son of the Prince of Wales) shall have and enjoy in all occasions the style and title enjoyed by the children of dukes of this realm.”

As such, Archie will be entitled to the titles when Prince Charles accedes the throne.

George V’s declaration means that only Prince George, as a great-grandson of the monarch down the direct line of succession to the throne, was originally entitled to be a prince, as he is the eldest son of the eldest son of the Prince of Wales.

The Queen did step in ahead of George’s birth to issue letters patent to ensure the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s children would have the titles of prince and princess.

But they are children of the future monarch, whereas Archie is not. His father, Harry, is sixth in line to the throne, and will move down the line of succession if William and Kate have more children, and as George, Charlotte and Louis have children of their own.

At the time of Archie’s birth, it was reported the couple had decided he should be plain Master Archie Mountbatten-Windsor – the surname adopted by the royal family reflecting Prince Philip’s family name, and the Windsor name adopted by George V.

It was suggested this was because the couple wanted him to be seen as normal, without the burden of being a prince.

But Meghan made clear this was not the case. “It was not our decision to make,” she said.

The Sussexes indicated in the interview that they had expected Archie would be given the title of prince after Charles acceded the throne, but that they had been told that protocols would be changed - in line with Charles’s wish for a slimmed down monarchy - so that Archie would be excluded from becoming an HRH and prince.

Asked if Archie being a prince was important to her, she replied: “If it meant he was going to be safe, then of course.”

She added: “All the grandeur surrounding this stuff is an attachment I don’t have. I’ve been a waitress, an actress, a princess, a duchess. I’m clear on who I am, independent of that stuff. The most important title I will ever have is ‘Mom’.”

Extended members of the royal family also do not have automatic right to police security, which is a matter the royal family never discusses. It is a decision made with the family, Home Office and Metropolitan police. Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice no longer have security paid for by the taxpayer.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry reveal gender of second child!

It’s a girl! Meghan Markle and Prince Harry revealed the gender of their second child on Sunday evening during their sit-down interview with Oprah Winfrey. “It’s a girl,” the Duke of Sussex shared. Harry admitted that it was “amazing” seeing his daughter’s ultrasound. “Just grateful to have any child, any one or any two would have been amazing, but to have a boy and then a girl, I mean what more can you ask for?” he said. “Now we’ve got our family. The four of us and our two dogs.”

As for whether they plan on having more kids? Meghan said, “Two is it.” The Duchess revealed that their second child is due in the summer time.

Meghan and Harry announced on valentine’s Day that their son Archie Harrison, who turns two in May, is going to be a big brother. A spokesperson for the couple said, “We can confirm that Archie is going to be a big brother. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are overjoyed to be expecting their second child.”

News of Meghan’s pregnancy came less than a year after the Duchess suffered a miscarriage. In an opinion piece for the New York Times, Meghan recalled feeling a “sharp cramp” after changing her son’s diaper last July. “I dropped to the floor with him in my arms, humming a lullaby to keep us both calm, the cheerful tune a stark contrast to my sense that something was not right,” she wrote. “I knew, as I clutched my firstborn child, that I was losing my second.”

The Duchess added, “Losing a child means carrying an almost unbearable grief, experienced by many but talked about by few.”

William and Kate release sweet new photo for Princess Charlotte's 6th birthday

Princess Charlotte turns six today and her parents have marked the occasion by releasing a stunning new portrait of her.

As usual, Kate Middleton was the one behind the camera, snapping the photo of her daughter over the weekend in Norfolk, England.

Charlotte grins at her mum behind the lens in the photo, wearing a bright floral dress and her hair down.

It appears to have grown during the family's lockdown in the UK, falling past her shoulders in the candid snap.

Royal fans have been treated to a few glimpses of the young princess lately, most recently in Kate and Prince William's family video released for their 10 th wedding anniversary, which fell on April 29.

In the video, Charlotte and her brothers can be seen playing together and laughing with their parents in some sweet family moments.

Prior to that, photos and video of the princess were shared by the royal family after the Cambridge's met and worked with Sir David Attenborough late last year.

And comparing this most recent portrait to the ones released for Charlotte's birthday last year show just how much the young royal has grown up.

However, Kate and William broke from tradition by not sharing the new birthday snap on their Kensington Royal Instagram.

William is currently partaking in a social media boycott to stand up against online bullying, meaning he has gone silent across Twitter and Instagram.

The boycott ends on Monday, so royal fans can likely expect to see the photo of Charlotte posted by her parents with a sweet birthday message then.

In the meantime, royal fans flooded to Twitter to share their thoughts and birthday wishes for the couple's only daughter.

"Look how big she's getting," one said, another writing: "She's really growing up fast!"

A third person chimed in: "The prettiest princess! She looks so grown up, and so blonde!!"

There were also plenty of comparisons to other royal family members, with fans debating whether Charlotte looked more like mum Kate or dad William in the new portrait.

Some suggested she resembled the Queen as a child, Lady Sarah Chatto, or her late grandmother Princess Diana.
